The data on the number of street dogs in the country is collected through the Livestock Census.
This census is carried out every five years.
According to the census, there has been a decline in the number of street dogs.
The number of street dogs in the 2019 census decreased compared to the 19th census in 2012.
In the 2012 census, there were 17.14 million street dogs, dropping to 15.31 million by the 2019 census.
According to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, there are no street dogs in Lakshadweep and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.
Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of street dogs in the 2019 census, with 2,059,261
In Rajasthan, the number of street dogs was 1,275,596, while in Punjab, it was 290,624, and in Delhi, it was 60,472.
